THE BELIEVER’S WALK IN WISDOM by Bishop Wale Ajayi
There’s nobody like Jesus. He is our Healer, our Redeemer, our Saviour and Friend.
John’s purpose for writing his Gospel was to reveal Jesus as the Son of God. Till that point, people did not know Jesus as the Son of God.
Many thought He was an ordinary guy who walked the street of Jerusalem and some thought He was just a prophet. John’s purpose was therefore to show in clear terms that Jesus was the Son of God. The miracles recorded in the book of John, cannot be found in the other Gospels. That is why the book of John is not a synoptic Gospel. John chose miracles that showed the divinity of Christ. For example, the miracle of turning water into wine. It looked like magic but water is not a raw material for making wine.
Before Jesus came, people were healing the sick. As such, John needed to show something that reveals Christ as the Son of God. The Miracle of turning water into wine is as absurd as turning paper to sand.
Now, John writes in his epistle, “behold, what manner of love is this that the Father has bestowed upon us that we should be called the sons of God”. (1 John 3:1-2).
What a privilege that you now have the same rights, quality and relationship with God that Jesus has with God! Not because of anything you did. You didn’t fast for it or give a seed for it. God bestowed it on you. We therefore lift our hands and thank Him.
The ‘Believer’s Walk’ is not about how you move your legs, but how you conduct yourself.
1John 2:6 says “He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.”
Why does God expect me to walk as Jesus walked? It is because He has given us Eternal Life (1John 5:10-13). Eternal Life is not what you experience in the by and by when you die. Eternal Life is something you have right now. It is the same operating system that Christ operated with and we have it right now.
Colossians 4:5 says “Walk in wisdom toward them that are without, redeeming the time.”
These people Paul speaks to were already wise unto Salvation (2Tim. 3:15-16). The wisdom spoken about here is the wisdom for everyday living. In this context, he is talking about relating with people. Some people are not saved yet, therefore live your life in wisdom so they will be attracted to your Christ. Not just by your moral behavior, but by the success you produce. God wants us to walk in wisdom and not as fools.
Ephesians 5:15 says “See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise,”
The Amplified Bible says “Look carefully then how you walk! Live purposefully and worthily and accurately, not as the unwise and witless, but as wise (sensible, intelligent people),”
Jesus is our pattern for how to walk in wisdom.
Jesus was born in Bethlehem but he didn’t grow up there. Since Herod wanted to kill Jesus, Joseph escaped with Jesus and Mary to Egypt thus fulfilling a prophecy about Jesus “…..out of Egypt I have called My Son” (Matt.2:15). An angel later appeared to Joseph to go back because Herod was dead. When they went back to Israel, they found out that there was another Herod ruling. This made Joseph escape to Nazareth to hide. That was where Jesus then grew up.
Now, Nazareth is the place you go when you are looking for anything bad. All the criminals lived there. All the ‘no-do-wells’ live there. People from Nazareth did not rise beyond a certain point in life. This is why when Nathaniel was told about Jesus of Nazareth, he asked “can anything good come out of Nazareth?”
There was no report that someone good ever came out of Nazareth. Nazareth was in Galilee and the Jews looked down on Galileans. Even Galileans looked down on Nazarenes. Now, Jesus didn’t just come from Galilee, He came from the lowest part of Galilee – Nazareth.
This is why the people were surprised at the kind of wisdom Jesus manifested, (Mark 6:1-2). If it was the common wisdom from Nazareth, the people would not have marveled.
When people saw the works Jesus did and they knew He was from Nazareth, it was obvious to them that His wisdom was from above.
There is a wisdom from above. When you got saved, you were born from above. There is a wisdom for those from above. You now function by the wisdom that is from above. You cannot be born again from above and function by the wisdom of this world, (James 3:13-18).
When you have envy and strife in your life, Satan is attracted. He smells it. When the Bible says he moves to and fro the earth seeking whom to devour, he is looking for where there is strife. Once he smells it, he calls his guys and they won’t leave until he finishes everything.
There is a wisdom from above and Jesus walked by this wisdom that came from above. Solomon experienced a bit of this wisdom, yet he became the wisest man that lived on the earth (before and after his time). The Queen of Sheba came to hear of Solomon’s wisdom (2Chron. 9:1-3, Matt. 12:42).
Now, Jesus says “a greater than Solomon is here” (Luke 11:31). Despite the amount of wisdom Solomon exhibited, Jesus said “a greater than Solomon is here.” Why?
It is because Jesus operates by the Wisdom from above – Eternal Life. Eternal Life is at work in Him. Therefore, you can also put hand on your chest and say “a greater than Solomon is here” (Matt. 11:11).
“And (they) were beyond measure astonished, saying, He hath done all things well: he maketh both the deaf to hear, and the dumb to speak,” Mark 7:37.
You can do all things well. You can be a jack of all trades and master of all. It is the wisdom of this world that says jack of all trades and master of none, (Exo. 31:1-5).
Jesus is the fullness of everything and the good news is that you have the same operating system like Christ.
How did Jesus function in this wisdom that is from above? His works are recorded in the Gospels – Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. Listen, when you read about Jesus healing blind Bartimaeus, don’t see yourself as the blind. You are Jesus healing blind Bartimaeus. When you read in the Bible and see Jesus feeding 5,000 people, you are not number 321 waiting for your bread and fish. Rather, you are Jesus feeding 5,000 people.
Why? We have the life of God! We have the same operating system.
This wisdom was activated in Jesus by reading and meditating on Scriptures. In simple English, read your Bible and meditate on the Word. There is no shortcut.
Jesus operated under the Law (Gal.4:4) and success and prosperity under the Law was tied to meditation, (Josh.1:7-8, Psa. 1:1-3). Jesus read and meditated on Scriptures. As He did, that wisdom of God already inside of Him was activated.
Since we are not under the Law, we don’t meditate on the Law but on the Word of His grace, (Acts. 20:32). We read the Scriptures with a Christ perspective and that wisdom of God is activated.
We know that Jesus read Scriptures because when Satan tempted Him, He replied by quoting “it is written.”
In Luke 14:8-11, Jesus quoted from Proverbs 25:6-8. In Matthew 5:43-45 Jesus quoted from Proverbs 25:21-22.
He read Scriptures for the wisdom of God to be activated in Him. You too must also know Scriptures.
